Donna, do you have a date for that one? When I was at Big Bend in Texas one year, those were the “first flowers of spring” and bloomed in late January.
This was the middle of May – it’s been a great year for yucca flowers. Big Bend would get them much earlier than we do – farther south and a lower elevation.
Is that Caballo Cone in the distance? I always wanted to re-scout the west facing slopes. There are a ton of busted-up geode fragments there. It is fun to think that there may be a “mother lode” up on the higher slopes.
Yes, that is Caballo Cone – usually called Turtleback Mountain locally. There are lots of mines on the west slope. And lots of crystals – I had never thought of them as busted-up geodes, but that makes sense. Have you done a post on that area? It might have been before I started reading your blog. Yours is one of my favorites, but it makes me restless and want to get out hiking!

I figured that Big Bend would get them earlier, wasn’t sure how much. I forgot about the difference in elevation.
Nice work! You capture just enough but never too much.
Thank you.
I love it! 🙂
So glad you obeyed the sign(s) and STOPped to capture this.
Of course, I obeyed, except for the questionable U-turn to get there.

In fact, there is an old post, see: https://newmexicomeanders.wordpress.com/2013/11/19/2013-11-17-turtleback-a-k-a-caballo-cone/
It looks like I once knew that the peak was also called Turtleback, but its been a while since I was there.
Thanks for reading, I appreciate the recommendations you’ve posted for my site!
