Stripes and Concretions

I think I found a new favorite rock. You do have favorite rocks, don’t you?

I’ve been hiking in this canyon for years and never saw this rock until yesterday. It’s about three feet (1m) across – not inconspicuous.

The flat surface is quite smooth and striped with some ferrous compound. The concretions are, of course, raised, but not damaged. That’s all I know.

Sierra county, New Mexico, USA.

Fascinating. I found one example on the Berrenda Ranch that I named polka dot rock. The concretions are not raised but even with the surface of the rock. You need to come out for a walk when the weather improves.

  3. What an interesting rock, Donna! I can’t say I have a favorite, but I’ve seen a few that I would’ve liked to take home with me. Have a happy week!
