Tarantula Hawk

The mesquite is in flower and attracts dozens of tarantula hawks.  They are the New Mexico state insect.

    Beautiful. The contrast between wings and body. The tiny details. I’ve seen a lot of them on the trail while running at the lake.

    Beautiful photo. I used to be rather frightened of those when I was a kid. I thought they were scary looking.

    I did not know what a Tarantula Hawk was when I spent a half hour chasing one around near Phoenix, Arizona. I had to be within about 2 inches to get the shot. I’d have never chased it if I’d known it’s the most venomous insect in North America!!! lol!
