I love these flowers…at all stages
I have many photos of their evolution

When we were kids (yup, another one of those stories) we used to pick these beautiful trumpet-shaped flowers and take them to school to proudly present them to our teachers. We also played with the prickly seed balls, though fortunately we didn’t try to eat those. I was surprised to learn later in life that the plants are poisonous, and wondered if the teachers knew that and thought we wanted to poison them!

  3. I don’t think I’d ever seen (or at least not noticed) the buds. That whole plant family is poisonous in one way or another…it’s the nightshade family and includes, besides nightshade, tobacco, datura/jimson weed, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and petunias.

That’s the strangest flower bud I’ve ever seen. Thanks for sharing its strangeness.
