Prada Marfa

pradaIf you drive down Highway 90 south of Van Horn, it’s almost a requirement to photograph the Prada Marfa building (which is really closer to Valentine, Texas).  But I resist the idea of the same old photo over and over.  That’s not to say I didn’t take that photo – I did.  But I really wanted something I hadn’t seen before.  I chose the bullet holes in the window with a nice reflection of the soil in front of the building against the handbags and shoes.

There is something surreal about both of these images that fills me with questions. Your close-up bullet hole approach is very creative. There are stories here.

There are so many layers here. My first reaction was a huge chuckle re: the big crack on top of the fashion accessories; so unexpected. But the crack was caused by a bullet — Wild West!! Reminds me of the reason suggested for the demise of the Norse settlements in Greenland: the residents were paying so much attention to the fashions from Europe that they forgot to attend to the basic needs for survival as the Little Ice Age approached.

How Texas this is ! big ranchers with Prada money, and rifles in hand, shop there in the scrub desert…the boutique stock is limited but Hey! it’s Prada. Surreal and so many layers: for sure.
