Tail-less House Finch

Sometimes I’m lucky enough to be able to identify individual animals, although it often is not lucky for them.  This house finch is missing its tail.  I’m not sure how it affects the bird or how long it takes to grown another tail.  They do grow another, don’t they?  It’s also a cold day, so it puffs up to keep warm.

Adorable photo! And good news! It will grow another one! 🙂
Most likely lost it when a falcon or something else tried to catch it for dinner. So it’s a lucky little guy.

That’s a beautiful photo–the color is exquisite. When these birds molt they shouldn’t lose all of their tail feathers at the same time, so this is indeed likely a close shave with a hawk. But you do get some funny looking birds with the change of season.

Poor little guy! Great shot though.
