Jacumba Statues – Who Are They?

Driving Old Highway 80 between Manzanita and Jacumba in southern San Diego county I was startled to see these strange life-sized figures dressed mostly in sweatshirts and hard hats.

Some guarded a gate.

Most looked as though they were wandering through the brush dressed to await a nuclear blast.  I turned around and went back to the beginning and stopped several times to get some photos.

I have no idea why they are there or who they are, but they are creepy.  My discomfort with them only increased when the border patrol stopped.  He just wanted to make sure I was okay.  My turning and stopping had gotten his attention in this area that is popular for undocumented worker crossings.  I asked if he knew what these being were and he had no idea either.

Carry on.  Whoever you are.

Do they taste salty? I’m thinking maybe Sodom and/or Gomorrah are nearby. They’re not facing due west (toward me), are they???

Interesting they have now enlisted zombie manikins to guard the borders, I hope it is not indication to any state of the Union policies? Oh my!

My grandparents lived in Temecula in San Bernardino County and around their property were many trails that were used by illegal aliens that made that far up into California. In fact the Border Patrol made a regular stop at the top of a hill on my grandparents property because of the view. My grandfather acquired a department story dummy and dressed it in olive green military-like dress, along with a rusted pellet gun and a WWII helmet and lovingly called him Fernandez.
Fernandez was a dummy intended to keep any aliens away from the house, garage, vehicles, etc.

    Are these Fernandez’ cousins?

They are just amazing! In our south west there is a stretch where there are all sorts of ‘cows’ – one in an airplane, another on top of a silo. If nothing else they slow down traffic on a highway.
