Amos Claycomb’s November 1902 Diary

My Grandfather kept diaries most of his life.  This is from his 1902 journal when he was 16 and living in Sycamore, Illinois.  I post a month each Monday.

Saturday, November 1, 1902
It has been both fair and cloudy today.
I picked popcorn most of the forenoon.
Papa is having a new bathtub put in the bathroom today.

Sunday, November 2, 1902
It has been cloudy nearly all day and it rained a little this afternoon towards night.
I went to church and Sunday School and then we all went up to Grandma’s for dinner.  I walked home from there before the rest started.

Monday, November 3, 1902
It has been a nice day.
I helped with the washing a little while before going to school this morning.
Grandma Townsend went into Chicago but is coming out tonight.

Tuesday, November 4, 1902
It has been raining all day but it was very light until tonight when it began to rain fairly hard.
Papa, George, Edward and I went up to the Northwestern stockyards before breakfast this morning and got three cattle.

Wednesday, November 5, 1902
It rained all of last night and all today until about the middle of the afternoon when it quit.

Thursday, November 6, 1902
It has been cloudy all day and a little colder than usual.

Friday, November 7,1902
It has been a nice day.
After school this afternoon I went to a foot-ball game between some Sycamore and some DeKalb boys.

Saturday, November 8, 1902
It was cloudy at first this morning but cleared up about nine o’clock.
I took the milk up to the factory this morning and then George and I picked some seed sweet-corn.  We finished the corn this afternoon and then beat on a carpet for a while.
Louise went to a hen party this afternoon at Marion Van Galder’s.

Sunday, November 9, 1902
It has been partly nice and partly cloudy today.
I took the milk up to the factory and went to Sunday-School at noon.
Papa was up at Uncle Fred’s for dinner.

Monday, November 10, 1902
It has been cloudy all day and it commenced to rain a little after four o’clock this afternoon.

Tuesday, November 11, 1902
It has been cloudy all day and it rained all of last night.

Wednesday, November 12, 1902
It has been partly nice and partly cloudy today.
Grandma Townsend went into Chicago this morning. and came out tonight.
Papa went up town after supper tonight.

Thursday, November 13, 1902
It has been cloudy all day and it commenced to rain in the middle of the afternoon and is still raining.

Friday, November 14, 1902
It rained very hard this morning for a while and has been cloudy all the rest of the day.
I went to a dance with Bess Branen tonight and had a very nice time.  I walked to and from the dance on the electric road ties.

Saturday, November 15, 1902
It has been cloudy and cold all day.
I took the milk up to the factory this morning and then went up to Grandma’s after Louise who staid up there last night.  Grandma had a bad spell last night but is a little better now.
Papa went into Chicago this noon and is going to stay over night.
I slept most of the afternoon.

Sunday, November 16, 1902
It has been cloudy all day and it commenced to rain about noon and has been raining most of the time since then.
I took the milk up to our customers this morning.  I went to Sunday-School at noon walking both ways.
Papa came home from Chicago tonight.

Monday, November 17, 1902
It has been cloudy all day.
Grandma is a little better now from the bad spell that she had last Friday night.

Tuesday, November 18, 1902
It was cloudy this forenoon but it cleared up at noon and was nice this afternoon.  I walked home from school this afternoon.
Tonight our Sunday-School class went up to Mr. Lahlin’s where we played games.  I walked both ways.

Wednesday, November 19. 1902
It was cloudy and foggy at first this morning but it cleared up in the middle of the forenoon and has been nice the rest of the time.

Thursday, November 20, 1902
It has been partly cloudy and partly nice day.
We began turning the cows out in the cornfield just west of the house this morning that we milk up here.
Papa went up town after supper tonight.

Friday, November 21, 1902
It has been cloudy nearly all day and a little colder than usual.
I walked right home after school tonight and took the pony and went back up town to help drive four cattle home.

Saturday, November 22, 1902
It has been a fairly nice day.
George and I sorted a few potatoes this forenoon and I went up town for a little while this afternoon.

Sunday, November 23, 1902
It was nice until about noon and then it clouded up for the rest of the day.
I took the milk up to our customer this morning and then got a paper.
I went to Sunday-School at noon and slept most of the afternoon.

Monday, November 24, 1902
It has been a very nice day.
I walked to school this morning and back again tonight.
Papa started this afternoon for Galesburg and Monmouth where he will visit for a short time.

Tuesday, November 25, 1902
It has been cloudy all day and rather cold.
I walked to school this morning and back again tonight.
The men were putting gravel on the track almost up to the house on the west side today.

Wednesday, November 26, 1902
It began cloudy this forenoon and commenced snowing about noon and ended about dark.  There is a little snow on the ground and it is a good deal colder than usual.
School let out tonight and there will be no more until next Monday.

Thursday, November 27, 1902
It has been a fairly nice day.
It is Thanksgiving and we all went up to Grandma’s for dinner.
I went up town this morning to take the milk and to get the mail.

Friday, November 28, 1902
It has been cloudy and cold all day.
I went out to the Coolidge farm this morning and got two cans of milk which I took up to the factory.
I stayed around home all the afternoon watching the men put gravel on the electric road part of the time.

Saturday, November 29, 1902
It snowed most of the forenoon but cleared up about noon and has been nice the rest of the day.
I went up town for a while this forenoon on the pony.
I also went up town this afternoon and got a hair-cut and walked home.

Sunday, November 30, 1902
It has been a nice day.
I walked up town to get a paper this morning and we all went to Sunday-School at noon.
