Amos Claycomb’s February 1901 Diary

My Grandfather kept diaries most of his life.  This is from his 1901 journal when he was 15 and living in Sycamore, Illinois.  I post a month each Monday.

Friday, Feb 1, 1901
It has been a very nice day.|
Louise, George and Edward went to a school entertainment tonight.

Saturday, Feb 2, 1901
It has been snowing almost all day.
I went hunting rabbits this morning but did not get any.  I also piled some wood.  I went up town this afternoon and walked home.

Sunday, Feb 3, 1901
It has been snowing a regular blissard all day.
I have staid home all day.

Monday, Feb 4, 1901
It has been a nice day.  There are large drifts from yesterday’s snow.
Edd Swedeburg started today to work for us another year.
We went to school in the sleigh.

Tuesday, Feb 5, 1901
It has been a nice day.
I went to a party tonight at Bessie Stephens.
I got my watch this afternoon from the jewelers where it has been cleaned.

Wednesday, Feb 6, 1901
It has been a nice day today.
My watch is a silver one and a gold chain.  It is a key winder.

Thursday, Feb 7, 1901
It has been a nice day.

Friday, Feb 8, 1901
It commenced snowing this afternoon and is snowing yet.
Nellie staid up town tonight to go to a party.

Saturday, Feb 9, 1901
It has been a very nice day.
I went up town this morning but staid home this afternoon.

Sunday, Feb 10, 1901
It has been a very nice day.
I went to Sunday school.

Monday, Feb 11, 1901
It has been a nice day but it snowed a little last night.

Tuesday, Feb 12, 1901
It has been a nice day.
Mrs. Hill, Louise and I went to a show called “The Little Minister” made up by home talent tonight.  It was very good.

Wednesday, Feb 13, 1901
It has been a nice day today.

Thursday, Feb 14, 1901
It has been a nice day.

I went to a card party tonight at Bessie Brenan’s and got the prize for not beating a single game.  We played cinch.  The prize was a small pair of overalls to put matches in.

Friday, Feb 15, 1901
It has been a nice day.
I got vaccinated tonight after school.

Saturday, Feb 16, 1901
It has been a nice day.
I piled wood this forenoon and went down town for a little while this afternoon

Sunday, Feb 17, 1901
It snowed quite a little this morning, was stopped about ten o’clock and we went to Sunday school.
George and I had a snowball fight tonight.

Monday, Feb 18, 1901
It has been a nice day.
Nellie staid up to Grandma’s tonight and papa went to a musical.
Our new girl came this morning.  Her name is Edla Johnson.

Tuesday, Feb 19, 1901
It has been very cold today with a strong wind.
Papa, Eleanor and Louise went to a dance given by the Eastern Star tonight.
It is said to be the coldest day we have had this year.

Wednesday, Feb 20, 1901
It has been a nice day.
I went to Amanda Peterson’s wedding to Albert Wilson this afternoon at her home about three miles north of town.  I took her a spoon for a present.  I had a nice time.  Mrs. Hill and Louise also went.

Thursday, Feb 21, 1901
It has been a nice day.  It began snowing a little tonight.

Friday, Feb 22, 1901
It has been very cold today.
We did not have school because it was Washington’s birthday.
I piled wood for a little while this morning.  I have staid home all day and read most of the day.

Saturday, Feb 23, 1901
It has been pretty cold today.
I went down to the butchers after some meat this morning on foot.
I went up town this afternoon and saw the doctor about my vaccination.

Sunday, Feb 24, 1901
It has been a nice day.
I went to Sunday school.

Monday, Feb 25, 1901
It has been a nice day.
Papa went to Minnisoto to buy some land tonight.
Amanda and Albert Wilson made us a visit tonight.

Tuesday, Feb 26, 1901
It has been a nice day.

Wednesday, Feb 27, 1901
It has been a nice day.

Thursday, Feb 28, 1901
It has been a nice day.
I went to a party at Grace Gochenour’s tonight and had a very nice time.
February is said to have been the coldest February in twenty-five years.
