Hot Political Issue: Bluedog

In many places the tough political questions of the day involve civil rights, infrastructure, and budgets.  Not in nearby Elephant Butte, New Mexico.  Here the hot issue is what to do about a dog.  Just one dog, one sweet, gentle well-behaved cattle dog.  His crime:  he walks free.

His name is Blue.  And he has a Facebook page at Bluedog EB-Mascot.  He was dumped as a puppy and took up residence (wisely) near Casa Taco – a fine Mexican restaurant.  When the restaurant closed for a while, people still fed Blue, but eventually he moved to the Butte General Store.  He is a smart dog.  He is not tied up.

He has a doghouse; he’s neutered and has all his vaccinations – courtesy of the owners of the store and local residents.  He spends his days outside the store, greeting people and accepting petting and belly scratching.  He moves to keep in the shade and keeps out of the way of cars.  He’s getting on in years (maybe 11) and takes it easy.  People stop by to see him.  And contribute to his upkeep.  Which now probably includes legal fees.  Some people have tried to get him into their cars, but he won’t go.  Some have walked him to their fenced yards, but he digs out to return to his place.  He doesn’t want to be fenced in.

In response to a death here in T or C by dogs, Elephant Butte is strengthening their regulations and enforcement (good idea).  Blue was cited for being loose.  The store owners countered that he was a community dog.  A judge gave some time for a “special condition” to be gotten from the city – to ‘grandfather in’ Blue.  The city hasn’t done it.  And so begins the battle.  There’s another meeting on June 13th – supporters of Blue are asked to attend.

And I would suggest that you check out his Facebook page (Bluedog EB-Mascot) and perhaps become his friend.  And if you live locally, go to the meeting.  Keep Blue Free!

So ends my political statement.

I’ll add Blue to Camera Critters so more folks can know about him.  There’s also a petition at for him.

  1. I’m rooting for Blue and his supporters. Please keep us informed Donna.

  2. Melinda Canady says:

Such a heart-tugging story. I have 2 cattle dogs and they are so intelligent and loyal. They are not natured to be aggressive. I sure hope the town will “grandfather” him in. I can think of no greater ambassador for Elephant Butte. I am certainly rooting for Blue and his “people” and hoping the town government will see this situation as special. You can’t have every dog running around loose, but Blue deserves some special attention.

  3. Don Watson says:

The town government is BARKING up the wrong tree. Let this “BEST FRIEND” of the community spend the rest of his life being loved by the community. Go away BIG BROTHER-you are a nuisance to everyone! Be constructive fgor a change!

  4. Pat says:

What a great community asset! Blue needs to stay free.

  5. dianne says:

it’s so obvious that Blue belongs where he is
I hate it when time and resources are wasted in place of good common sense
    just let him be

he’s a beauty and I love that the community is looking out for him

  6. As the saying goes “It takes a village…..” and that appears to be what this community is doing very well. But, every town and situation has to have that one bad apple, that almost always neurotic female, or that “get your kicks off” by “yelling wolf” outsider who wants to spoil the party for everyone else by making waves. And, I think that is what is happening here.

The powers that be (here) should understand that if it isn’t broken they have nothing to fix. I cast my vote for leaving Blue alone to live out his life by his own choosing.

  7. ladyfi says:

What a beautiful dog. Why can’t they just let him lead his life in peace?

  8. Eileen says:

It seems that Blue prefers being free. It is wonderful of the store owners for taken good care of him. Thanks for sharing Blue’s story, I hope it has a happy ending for Blue.

  9. He love his freedom!

Visiting a little late from Camera Critters, here’s my entry, hope you can still take a peek, your comment will be greatly appreciated.
