Amos Claycomb’s June 1900 Diary

My Grandfather kept diaries most of his life.  This is from his 1900 journal when he was 14 and living in Sycamore, Illinois.  I post a month each Monday.

Friday, June 1, 1900
It has been a nice day today only it sprinkled a little about four o’clock.
I went up town tonight to hear the band play and had to walk home.

Saturday, June 2, 1900
It has been a nice day today only a little cooler than usual.
I piled wood and mowed the lawn this morning.
I played ball this afternoon and my side was beat.

Sunday, June 3, 1900
It has been a nice day today.
I rode the pony to Sunday school.
I was jumping a pool of water and fell down and hurt my thumb so I can’t move it.
Mrs. Hill made some candy this morning.

Monday, June 4, 1900
It has been a very nice day today.
I went up town on the pony tonight.
Mrs. Hill, papa, and Nellie went to the Waterman Hall tonight.

Tuesday, June 5, 1900
It has been a very nice day today.  It was 80º above at noon.
I rode Louise’s wheel to school this morning and walked home tonight.
It is George’s birthday today and he is eleven years old.

Wednesday, June 6, 1900
It has been either cloudy or raining about all the time today.  It was 84º above at noon.
When I went after the cows it began raining and I got very wet.
I lost my knife going after the cows tonight.

Thursday, June 7, 1900
It has been a very nice day today.  It was 80º above at noon.
I went to a ballgame this afternoon.  The Sycamores played the Warrens of Chicago and got beat 4 to 2.

Friday, June 8, 1900
It has been a very nice day.  It was 89º above at noon.
I had the pony shod this morning.  I had one of my teeth filled with silver this afternoon.

Saturday, June 9, 1900
It has been a very nice day.
The nine that I am in played another nine this morning and we beat them 14 to 11.
I pulled mustard out of an oat field and while doing it I found an Indian arrowhead.

Sunday, June 10, 1900
It has been a very nice day to day.
I went to Sunday school at noon.
Papa and Eleanor went to a funeral this afternoon.
I had eleven little chickens hatch today.  I have now more than 40 little chickens.

Monday, June 11, 1900
It has been a nice day today.  It was 80º above at noon.
I played ball a little after school tonight.

Tuesday, June 12, 1900
It has been a very nice day today.
We are having a new hardwood floor being laid in our front hall.
I played ball a little after school tonight.

Wednesday, June 13, 1900
It rained quite a while this morning but it cleared up this afternoon.  It was 78º above at noon.
I went up town for a while after supper tonight.

Thursday, June 14, 1900
It has been a very nice day but is a little cooler than usual tonight.
School let out today and I am now in the eight grade.
Grandma came home from Idaho last night.  She went into Chicago this morning but is back now.

Friday, June 15, 1900
It has been a nice day today.
I played the same nine we played last Saturday but got beat 12 to 10.
I went up town after supper tonight.

Saturday, June 16, 1900
It has been a very nice day today.
I pulled mustard on the Coolidge farm this forenoon.
I went to a ballgame this afternoon between the Unions and Cuban Grants.  The latter beat 3 to 2.

Sunday, June 17, 1900
It has been a very nice day today.
I went up to Grandma’s this afternoon and she gave me some ore that she had gotten in Colorado.
It is Children’s Day today and I went to the exercise at the Methodists tonight.

Monday, June 18, 1900
It has been a very nice day today.
I began picking peas in the pea-field today and earned 70¢.
I went up town tonight and got a pair of new shoes.

Tuesday, June 19, 1900
It has been a nice day today.
I went out into the pea-field again today.
I went up town tonight after supper for some ice.

Wednesday, June 20, 1900
It has been a nice day today.
Papa went into Chicago this morning.
I went out in the pea-field again today.

Thursday, June 21, 1900
It has been raining all day.
I did not pick peas today because it was too wet.
Papa came home from Chicago this afternoon.

Friday, June 22, 1900
It has been cloudy or raining all day.
I hoed corn all this forenoon and picked peas a little while this afternoon.
I went up town tonight after supper.

Saturday, June 23, 1900
It has been a nice day today.
I have a new buckskin pony to ride now and I have been riding almost all day.
We got 50 little chickens tonight that were hatched from an incubator we hired.

Sunday, June 24, 1900
It has been a very nice day today.
I rode the pony up to Grandma’s this morning and got a ball she had bought him.

 

Monday, June 25, 1900
It has been a nice day only very hot.
I went into the pea-field and made $1.20 the most I have ever earned in the pea-field in one day.
I went up town tonight after supper.

Tuesday, June 26, 1900
It has been a nice day today.
I went out in the pea-field and picked eleven baskets, the same as yesterday.
I went up town tonight after some ice.

Wednesday, June 27, 1900
It has been a nice day.
I went out in the pea-field and picked eleven baskets.
I went up town tonight.

Thursday, June 28, 1900
It has been a nice day today.
I only picked nine baskets of peas today.
I went up town tonight.

Friday, June 29, 1900
It has been a nice day only cooler than usual.
I went into the pea-field and got nine baskets.

Saturday, June 30, 1900
It has been a nice day today.
I picked peas a little while this morning.
I went over to DeKalb this afternoon to see a ballgame in which DeKalb beat Sycamore 7 to 2.
