On the way to Gallup last week we stopped at the Albuquerque Alpacas ranch, which incidentally has an incredible gift shop with locally spun yarn and finished products.  This was the first time I had been around alpacas and they were fascinating.  Here’s one of the babies…

Back on the road we were questioning what an alpaca was in relationship to other animals.  We  learned that they are Camelids.  That was our new word for the day.  Other camelids are – obviously – camels as well as vicuna, llamas, guanacos, and alpacas.

One of my favorite bloggers posted this photo of a camel.  Definitely a resemblance there!

Here’s a young alpaca checking out Eve’s cell phone.

Remember Camelid – use it in a sentence today!

  1. I met my first Alpaca at an art festival a couple years ago and I fell in love. She was black with those gorgeous eyes and we hummed together. That felt so incredible. Picked up a bunch of literature on them. Would love to have a couple !

  2. Hmmm. I thought a camelid was something you put on your camera lens when not in use.

    Sorry . . . .
